The first ever mobile phone I got was an old second hand Nokia phone.
.
It was huge and bulky. Most importantly, its cover was opaque and purple in colour. Purple is my favourite colour. It has this dragon motif on its back which lights up every time there’s an incoming call. A modification my friend rendered for me because it was a second hand phone and she was selling it to me for only RM50.
Never knew the model name till now but definitely remember the mucous-like keypad.
.
When you’re 14 and every one around seems to be reachable via a personal line, you’d want the same too. I lapped on it immediately, after loads and loads of begging from my mum who reluctantly gave me the money.
.
When my dad found out though, he was furious. A 14 year old should not be given the privilege of a mobile phone. Moreover, the phone was a second hand product wherein I didn’t check thoroughly before purchasing it. The phone I bought has way too many technical problems that because I’ve got myself a prepaid SIM card already (SIM card those days were so expensive! RM50 was it? I’m pretty sure it used to cost so much more than SIM card these days), I was given my dad’s older one to use instead.
.
The first mobile phone was then given to my younger cousin as a toy.
.
Since then, mobile phones I had were all hand me downs from my dad (probably 1 or 2 after that?), except 2 years ago when my dad finally bought me an XpressMusic phone, the bulky sliding one, with no questions asked. I was surprised; it was not like I really deserved a new phone anyway.
.
Recently though, I realised my increasing want of having a WiFi function in my phone. Surfing the web on prepaid account costs money. I went into a few stores and checked out a few models. I haven’t found one that I like yet I’m hoping for a new phone.
.
My opportunity came last Sunday when my dad told my 12 year old twin brothers over dinner that they would need mobile phones next year since they’re going to be in secondary school.
.
13 year olds with mobile phones.
Kids these days get things so easily!
Thanks to us predecessors who fought for that privilege in the early days, AGREE?
.
“Daddy, since you’re planning to give them a mobile phone, get a new one for me and give them mine! :]”
“No, you’re NOT getting a new one. Earn your own money if you want one.”
.
What the.
.
The boys better appreciate what they’re getting else I’m confiscating whatever phones (hand me downs or not) they’re getting for my own use! Kidding. :]
.
Question: So hey, when is your first mobile phone?
[New Post] I want a new phone! – via #twitoaster http://danielctw.com/2010/09/22/i-want-a…
purple is my favorite colour too.
Yay for purpleeeee awesomeness! =)
i had my 1st nokia 3310 during my age of 16 n i still think its a great phone… 🙂
nowadays i can see primary students using iphone 3gs… im still using my sony erikson capalang model… sigh~
Googled that model up! Pretty sturdy looking apart from looking like it could last through any form of abuse. My oh my, school kids using iphone 3gs! How very spoilt. Don’t sweat too much about your capalang model man, at least it’s still a functioning phone! =) Can call, can sms, good enough! Hehe.
yalar… but if the kids got iPhone 4 is good mah then their parents can have facetime conference with the parents… cant go to cybercafe, malls, hang out place or the arcade… haha!
Wow, didn’t think of that! You’re a clever munkey indeed. (; Still, those technologies are reserved only for the rich and privileged… People like me can only hope. =p
That is so true. I got my first phone when i was 16. It was like err…. dunno 3rd or 4th hand summore. >.<
My younger sis on the other hand got her first phone when she is like 13.
But at least now, dad got me a BB… ^_^
Wow, your daddy’s so nice. =) I’m hoping for a BB too! I’d probably get it after I graduate though. Oh well. Better model in the future! (;
The first phone I used was a VERY bulky set from Alcatel, probably the size of a cordless of phone. (the call rates were outrageous too) switched to Nokia 6110 shortly, after that I have changes quite a few phones. The first time I got my cell was when I was like 12-13 years old.
Googled Alcatel! My oh my, the latest designs are cute! =) However, does your first phone look like this?: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_cQ-U7kPivCs/S_NkhIG7AKI/AAAAAAAACqc/bsqtPrGuBtA/s320/Alcatel_One_Touch_club_db_g.jpg
That looks like a toy phone to me! HAHA. Cool though. Do you still keep it? Having had your first phone when you’re 12-13 years old… Man, you were one lucky kid. =)
Well let’s just say that my first phone was way older than that picture, it may sound very hard to believe but it was so bulky and sturdy that I had once used it to fix a loose nail! The battery was almost the size of my hand, suffice to say, there was no way you could fit it in a pocket, there were no modern carrying cases either so portability was really a problem. I wanted to keep it as an antique for future generations but I sort of misplaced it :/
my 1st hp was a hp that i won fr a celcom contest….bulky hp wit an antenna =)
Oh man, those were old school stuff! Haha! Nevertheless, cool. =)
I must say, I am very impressed with this post. 🙂
Btw, my first first hand mobile phone that I bought on my own was when I was studying in college 3rd year (degree time). That’s like when I was 22 years old. Sad right? T_T It was a Nokia 6610.
Of course I was using a 2nd hand Nokia 3210 the year before, bought from a friend.
Needed to rant. lol.
I was annoyed la when my dad said no to me wanting a new phone because he was right, I’d have to work hard for it if I want one. And no, it isn’t sad! It’s the FIRST mobile phone you bought on your own! That should be something REALLY special!
I haven’t even bought my first own phone yet. Still living off my parents. =p
Lucky u… I start using handphone during my first year in college… before that public phone looo~
Thus, makes you appreciate the technology even more than most of us who got it early. =)
