A Day Out at Penang

Posted by danielctw On March - 14 - 2010

This post was way backdated, but yes, I had the privilege to visit Penang Island again shortly before my Tibet trip. Yes, it’s way before my Tibet trip which was like half a year ago. Now how far back that was.

Ahhh… Penang reminds me when I am back at Malacca. All the old buildings, the unique buildings which you can hardly see in the now modern city of Kuala Lumpur. Not to mention a lot of history back then, which we get to visit now.

Some really old means of travel, the trishaw.

Up till now, I don’t think I’ve ever sat on a trishaw after I was 12 years old. Darn, that reminds me of my age. I am getting older. Nevertheless, the older one gets the more things one can do, eh wait, the more responsibility. Arghhhhhh!!!

Unlike previous trips to PenangĀ  (Pulau Pinang), this time I got the liberty to go on a tour of historical buildings and places of interest as this time we’re being guided by our guide, Su Lyn and also we were to guide a German national (plays Volleyball) to tour around Malaysia’s Pearl of the Orient.

One of the places we get to visit is the Khoo Kongsi. Well, seemingly is like a house full of Khoo’s (people who come from the ancestry line of Khoo). Superbly big, and the Khoo Kongsi is the biggest Kongsi in the whole of Penang, the street you’re looking at is the Cannon street. The reason : A cannon was fired towards this street. Huh?? Yup, during the war.

But I thought Penang is a strategic location to defend the Island???

Take a look at Fort Conwallis. Once long time ago, it was the fort to guard the city from the attack from the ocean. Now only a few remains of the Fort is there. Guess it again, this time I did go in after many times trying to visit the place only to find that it’s close on Sunday.

The cannon is now rusty, but look Jonas (the German guy I was talking about) just had to pose alongside the cannon. I should have asked him to do a photo shoot. He’s tall, way way tall. When I say tall, it means…..

This TALL. I only reached his shoulder. If you’ve met me, you will know how tall this German Volleyball player is. (pssst.. he’s from Saxon, girls, too bad he’s taken)

Of course, a fort won’t be called a fort if there’s no defense area, and a place to produce gun powder for the cannon. We need gunpowder and so that one can POW POW POW.. KABABOOM!!!

As light was insufficient, this is the best I can do. Though one can just put sand and call it gunpowder, noooo.. it’s the real thing.

Being in Penang, it’s not only the places of interest. It’s the food too. Well, food can come another time as I am writing this when I haven’t had my dinner. So I ain’t gonna show some food pics. But of course, going to Penang, you just had to buy those biscuits from Him Heang. Where’s that? I ain’t sure cause there was a guide to bring me there.

Look at the obscene amount of queue just to buy BISCUITS. Serious!!!!!

After talking about food, I am so hungry I can SUCK A BALITONG. What’s that? Have a view from my previous Penang Trip.

Suck Suck Suck~~~ Even Jonas had a try. Seriously I ain’t a fan of this sea mussel but if a tourist from another country can do it, so should I.

One response : WOOOT~~~~ I wanna eat again!

Finally after all that, meet the gang and the place we bunked in.

From top: Charles (rockers)
From bottom left : Khong Wai, Weird One, Su Lyn

Purely traveling and having food and sightseeing. A different experience for me. Should do this more often as I am not Penang lang (penangite).

Finally ending with a photo of a food in Penang. Anyone can roughly guess what’s this?

Another Day in Lhasa

Posted by danielctw On October - 15 - 2009

I am sure some of you wanted to know what happened in Lhasa. Well, as a matter of fact, when I’ve reached that place, Daniel Chew (me of course) was okay on the day he arrived on the train station in Lhasa, Tibet. With all my giant bag and a camera bag, you would have thought that Daniel would suffer from backaches and stuffs.

Daniel arrived in Lhasa Train Station

I look like a miniature guy with a big big big big bag and I can still pose. Now who say I wasn’t strong enough to carry a bag like this. So being our first night finally after the long stay in the train which nearly lasted 3 whole days, we’re waiting for our tour to come take us. Mind you, in Tibet, we need to get special permit to enter and the only way to enter is to go thru tour agencies (What a rip off…..)

Of course, I haven’t properly introduced my friends that went along on this trip. Well, other than their names here they are.

The Tibet Gang

Somehow I can’t resist but naming ourselves as THE TIBETAN TRIO. Familiar? Heard of the SOUTHERN TRIO?

Haha… the relieve we all had when we arrived in the so called dark alley and to be greeted with a place with superbly hotel like room. Nice bed they have there. There’s also WIFI connection here in this hotel. Seeing that we’ve reached this place about 10pm, we all grew tired and of course next day has arrived.

The following day deserved more pictures and to come to Tibet, one has to at least visit the Potala Palace. Once known to be the place where the Tibetan Kings reside, then the Dalai Lama and the administration. Now it serves more like a tourist spot.

Potala Palace Outside

Photo shot with original colors. Might have overdid the color settings on my camera though. The place is huge, lucky I got my Sigma 10-20mm lens along with me. Credit to both Kenny and Ek Wei for coming along and snapping photos too (some of my photos XD) .

But what the heck? Me posing like that? The picture above is so not me. I was trying to think, why not try a decent pose for the camera, but then I wondered. Isn’t that what most people do when they take photos? Where are the weirdness in this kind of shots?

GUESSED I JUST HAVE TO….

The Rough Journey to Tibet

Posted by danielctw On October - 5 - 2009

Daniel is back again. Well, been neglecting too much until I thought what the heck, let’s get on with the Tibet updates. After like nearly a month’s absence from work, lotsa things to do which I find that I can’t really modify and look through my photos. Yup, some of the photos which are in my friend’s laptop is already with me. So then let’s proceed with my classifying journey to the Land of Tibet.

My first knowledge of Tibet came all the way back to when I was still in college. How did I know about that place. All because of one storybook.

Tintin in Tibet Cover

Who would have thought the places that Tintin mentioned would now be the place that I would be traveling. Though that was years ago, and now I must say Tibet nowadays is too commercialized.

Finally now though, I can call it Daniel in Tibet.

Daniel in Tibet Tintin Parody

My journey as most know started on 29th August 2009 and it was on the plane to GuangZhao. Yes AirAsia doesn’t have a direct flight to Lhasa, Tibet or for my case, the flight to Chengdu from Kuala Lumpur wasn’t available at that time. (I was like, why why did AirAsia announced the new flight to Chengdu but only starting in October 2009)

Instead of writing places to visit here and there, here will be a rough explanation of my Journey to the West.

After arriving in GuangZhao, it was a few days for us to see how it’s like here. How careful and clean their park is.

Hello From Lhasa, Tibet

Posted by danielctw On September - 6 - 2009

Yo yo people. It loooks like I have the liberty to post something while I am at Lhasa Tibet on this backpacking trip. Wondering what has been happening while I was away out here. It always seem to be a good time to see what I see to the people I miss and love back in Malaysia.

Though it’s been just a week, I miss Malaysian food especially mamak and hahaha.. I am now craving for teh tarik and my daily dose of talking crap while doing my usual mamaking.

It was a gruesome 2 nights and 3 days at the train. So with nothing to do, the last day was more of scenery shots. Here is a sample of what is to come in the next future posts. This might also be just a filler post before the real one comes along.

Lhasa Mountain From Train

So nothing much to do. Not much time to edit. Most of them in raw format. I just wanna show you guys I am still alive and very much active. Only a little bit altitude sickness at the first few days up the train.

Snow Mountain

So until the day I’ll be back. Which is another 2 more weeks. I’ll be up to Everest Base camp tomorrow.

Langkawi Part 2 – People

Posted by danielctw On August - 27 - 2009

Langkawi didn’t just have nice scenery or rather scenes to take photos of. What fun is there if one just go to Langkawi island all alone to take photos without a bunch of crazy people. Those you can play and go crazy and “siao siao” (lunacy) with. Now admiringly there are 9 of us and this is where the fun started.

Eagle of Langkawi

There was a day where we went for eagle watch on one of the days. For those that visited my facebook album from the previous post, you would know that it’s not easy capturing them with just a 200mm lens. Budget required for 400mm lens. So why not this mighty eagle serve it’s purpose instead.

So just who were the crazy gang? Let’s get them into the picture.

Crazy Langkawi Gang

Now how many people do you see there? 7 or 8? (Thought it was 9, duh… Daniel is the one taking this photo) Well, all getting ready to pose for the camera. Some loves to pose with their back exposed like the 2 white shirted people. Wonder what they were thinking? It’s totally weird, wondering why the rest are ready and only 2 people posing like that. Hee… hee…

Do you actually see the 8th person in the photo? Well, if you don’t see him/her there, the next photo might reveal what that person was planning to do when he first stepped into the Island of Langkawi.

Hamsap William at Langkawi

Now you know why he loves Langkawi! All for the wrong reason. So WTF right? The rest of us took photos of ourself while he go chat up the white chick at the background. (pun intended… person in the photo please don’t kill me) WAHAHAHA!!!

That was Day 1 and yes, the day past by so fast without doing much. Day 2 was slightly better and more things to witness. It was meant to be a full day activity filled. It was also meant to be the day to buy all the alcohol one needed. For example I bought Absolut, Baileys and a Red Wine. Oppps.. and I just found out I have in stock 3 Baileys at home. (I seriously didn’t know)

Remember that guy above with the orange shirt. Somehow I found someone else with Orange too. Try to guess who. It’s none other than Mr Ma Lao.

Huh?? Who???

Have a look below…

Lonely Monkey

Ta Dah~~~~~ Orange Coat with a long black tail. Hohoho… look alike or not? Wahh~~~~~

Okay does this count as people? Not really!

Forgotten to mention, first day was actually fun. When we were a few hundred meters above sea level. Right on top the Hanging Bridge of Langkawi. Though it’s more of like a sky bridge. This is where Daniel makes his appearance. Well, I should be appearing in my blog right?

Bridge Slumber Post

Damn… I look so plain. So bored. So not attractive. Of course, because I wanted to make the scenery looks nicer. (What rubbish!!!) It was a magnificent sight to behold, seeing how high we were. So high, we can actually do bungee jump if there was actually one in Langkawi. Just too bad that there ain’t one.

But what I like about this bridge and it’s wide and vast background is that one can pose for the camera. Now how about a pose? Well, who else to do the pose but with Yen.

Pose Photo

Nice leh :P Don’t jealouse can. Both also expert in posing. XP

Heeee… what do you think about the photo? Of course it’s way way way nicer if you compare to the above photo with the one below. The one below is one photo which I wouldn’t want to get caught taking for real. If you’re in my situation, you will understand.

GGP William

HELP HELP HELP ME

That’s the same guy with the orange shirt and look at what he’s doing now? OMG~~~~ Help me please.

ps : Seriously all photos taken and things wrote here are meant for fun and laughter and to make it look weird. Especially photos with William (yes that guy with the Orange shirt)

I can almost hear my saviours coming to help me, devising a plan to help me out from this problem. Just look at how serious they’re discussing. THe plans, the thoughts, the deep in thought posture, all to help me out from this situation. Way to go girls.

Female Gang of Langkawi

HELP IS ON THE WAY. JUST NEED TIME TO DISCUSS (don’t take too long though)

Before I even know it, there seems to be a solution. Finally the answer is out. They’ve found the solution, none other than one of the crazy gang in Langkawi. None other than our very own eyebrow guy, our Aaron Braces Guy.

Look what he did to save me?

AaronWoolala With Seducing Tshirt

What a good plan. A good message to send. Hee hee hee…. (Aaron don’t kill me also).

So there we have it, photos to see how much fun we had in Langkawi. There are lots of other photos which I haven’t finished uploading and I believe Facebook will be having loads of it. To end this hilarious make believe post, I shall present to you a photo, with dialogue amongst the people who went with Daniel to Langkawi.

Busy Scene Act in Langkawi

What a day we all had!

Signing off now. It’s 2:33am.

Never thought that I could conjure something up like this, but that’s where my weirdness come into place. So do stay tune in the coming future for more posts from the Weird One. Adios.
