I’ve Got the Power with Sucker Punch

Posted by Daniel Chew On February - 17 - 2011

After all those flicks and movies and theaters about the male dominant movies with their rail guns, M16 and the bombs and explosives and sweat, it’s time for some relaxing group of female firepower back into the movie. Yes, Sucker Punch is here to come and what a way for a title for a movie. Definitely a chick flick and what the heck is a sucker punch? Ahahaha… You punched the life out of a sucker?

Sucker Punch

Well, the story revolves around Babydoll (Emily Browning). Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls—the outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and the reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm). Of course, now this is where I come in.

The story now revolves around Daniel Takeshi (Daniel Chew) who is stuck alongside Babydoll and the other girls who were held against their will. Strange enough, I think with my martial art skills and talent, this will be a simple knock in the butt for me. Now with Amber (the fierce one) alongside the multi-talented Daniel Takeshi (me… definitely); sorry Babydoll, guess this time you’re not the main lead, it’s time to break through by using both brain and guts and talent.

Amber - Jamie Chung
The Hot Amber (Jamie Chung)

Hold on maybe Babydoll has some uses after all. Since she could throw sucker punches to those suckers who kept us against our will. Not your average daily life, this Sucker Punch will be a hell of a hilarious movie.

Sucker Punch Power
Power of the Sucker Punch

Now who says Sucker Punches aren’t strong. No pun intended

In truth the only character with a decent name is Amber. The rest have oh so crappy names like Blondie, Sweet Pea, Rocket, it makes you think that this is a cheapo lousy movie, but nevermind, at least there’s Amber. Hahahaha…

Additional Notes: In case some of you thought that Jamie Chung is a tad bit familiar, she was Chi Chi in Dragon Ball: Evolution and also as Takara in the well known game called Red Alert 3.

Celebrating Chinese New Year 2011

Posted by Daniel Chew On February - 8 - 2011

Chinese New Year 2011 was celebrated by my family with a Reunion dinner before Chinese New Year. There definitely has to be somewhat of a reunion dinner even though both my grandparents are not around and this year, we have BBQ (Barbeque) for dinner in our home.

BBQ Reunion Dinner

Some will find it strange to have BBQ for a reunion dinner as most will either cook home cooked dishes Chinese style. Well, it pays to be different. There were like 20 people over and with a Teresa Teng background music to accompany (obviously Dad’s chosen song).

Now onwards to the following day, it was time of the year again to go to Malacca to visit relatives and friends to collect angpow to wish them a happy fatt choy new year. Considering the Year of the Rabbit, it has its significant of being the luckiest animal around. Well, onward with the post, being able to go back to Malacca during Chinese New Year is one of a kind. Where else can you get authentic Chinese New Year Nyonya/Peranakan dishes?

Home Cooked Nyonya Food

Yes, it’s home cooked. Authentic. Some of the notable ones are listed below.

Itik Tim Nyonya Food

Itik Tim, the ingredients inclusive of home farm duck, “Kiam Chai” (Salty Vege), Brandy (if there is). Art of boiling this superb tasty soup is to boil it for long hours in order for the taste of the duck and the vege to mix together to add to the flavor of this soup. This food can be found in nyonya restaurants but loses its authenticity when it’s boiled with gas and not with charcoal.By the way some of these Itik Tim would also include the inner parts of the duck. One fine example is the blood of the duck.

Boiled Blood Itik Tim

Boiled Duck’s blood in some of the Itik Tim dishes. Not everyone cooks the same, so I got to try a variety of Itik Tim in a few houses.

It takes about one day to boil this soup and the longer the soup stays in the pot boiled, the better the taste.

Acah Nyonya Dish

Second dish would be Acah. Preserved Cucumber and Chili in sweet and sour sauce. Mind the photo quality as it was taken with my HTC Hero smartphone. One of a kind, usually only served during Chinese New Year.

Ponteh

Another Nyonya delicacy would be the Ponteh, a mix of home rared chicken, mushroom, ginger and secret sauce known only to the family. Some will also include bamboo shoots for the flavor.

Finally a dessert which is actually different from what we usually eat, the Taibak. This dessert is something like the Cendol, made of flour and sugar water.

Taibak

The TAIBAK is usually served as a prerequisite of a Baba Nyonya wedding. One of the reason though it’s because it cools down both the groom and the bride (well from what I was told) before hmmm… hmmm…

So now you have it, the food from the Baba Nyonya era. These are the kinds of food I look forward every Chinese New Year other than the usual kueh.

Relishing the Memories

Posted by Daniel Chew On February - 7 - 2011

I turned sentimental and looked back at old photos taken with my D40 during my early days. I felt that time was passing by so fast, and suddenly without knowing it, you’re already way past your prime and more things tend to come into your mind.

I thought those photos were lost as my laptop files were formatted. Luckily though I did have them backuped before in my brother’s laptop. So I shall rekindle the memories of the past.

Daniel Chew in 2008

The year was 2008. It was one of the earliest trip for me with a whole bunch of people that I got to know thru the Internet. Those days, blogging was something new and lots of people are blogging because they enjoy doing it. I enjoy doing it too, you will see in my blogging history, if you were to look back the past archives, you will know how my blogging back then has evolved. It was more personal and people do like to read personal writings.

There were some memorable shots that didn’t quite make it to my Facebook account and I am reminiscing to post those photos on Facebook and perhaps it’s time to tag all those friends who were with me those days.

So a tribute to those who went to Redang Island with me on those days. I miss you guys very much. It makes me think that as years come and goes, the most important thing is to always treasure the friendship. Some people come and go, but the memories are still very intact. Here’s to you guys.

Suarez Scores in Liverpool vs Stoke

Posted by Daniel Chew On February - 4 - 2011

It’s the year 2011. Looks like Liverpool are finally getting me all hype up once again. They have finally won 3 matches in a row after a string of bad results and this is a good year for Kenny Dalgish and team. Seemingly the debut of Luis Suarez in the team has proven superb even without any training on his first debut.

Luis Suarez Liverpool Action

After the departure of Fernando Torres, few people were asking how will Liverpool cope without their Star Striker? Everyone was expecting Luis Suarez to make his debut start, only for him to be put onto the bench. King Kenny (Kenny Dalgish) even tried a formation that is relatively unknown to most of us. Kyrgiakos was given a start to the line up and we all wondered what tactical changes were Kenny doing?

Sotiros Kyrgiakos in the Rain

Then it dawned upon me, we are facing Stoke City, the one with big man John Carew who is on loan to Stoke from Aston Villa. The Greek, Sotiris Kyrgiakos (Soto for short) was given the task to subdue the big man and to win the aerial battle. For me, he definitely did his job well.

The match was one of a kind, something which is of amazing football passing that have long been gone from the Liverpool that I knew. Finally this is a team that loves to attack and plays a different kind of football aside all the long ball and score techniques. The first 45 minutes was all about possession and Liverpool did have many chances to put themselves ahead only for the missing luck to find it at the back of the net. Amazing though, Jose Pepe Reina didn’t even have to make a save in the first 45 minutes.

The crowd was excellent and the cheers started pouring in as Luis Suarez started running and warming up at the sidelines. The start of the 2nd half began and just as most of the crowd were trying to get some breather, our new favorite Meireles scored in what an amazing volley. From a Kyrgiakos flick and avoidance, Raul Meireles scored the first goal for Liverpool and the crowd was roaring. Amazingly we had the 2nd goal from none other than one of the Kop’s new signing, Luis Suarez.

Luis Suarez Looks On after Goal Bound

Luis Suarez looking forward after slipping pass Stoke goalkeeper as he watches the ball go on into the net.

The goal was an excellent debut for a player on his first debut. I bet this time, Liverpool fans and players were all smiles as we watched the team go from zero to hero. So we have to believe that we will be able to win at Stamford Bridge this Saturday. All smiles from all of us and from the bench.

Andy Carroll all smiles

Andy Carroll couldn’t help smiling with the way Liverpool are playing and after Luis Suarez’s debut goal. He could have been thinking, “Now this is a team which plays the football that I would love to play.

Sad news though, Andy Carroll would not be fit in time for the Chelsea match but what would we see in the next match? Luis Suarez to start and a different formation from Liverpool? This Sunday will be a blast. You’ll Never Walk Alone. #YNWA

ps: This is my 2nd article for my favorite club Liverpool and I am hoping that I could look forward to a trip to Anfield Stadium. Am gonna get my Liverpool jersey soon.

The Wheels – Disco Roller Skating

Posted by Daniel Chew On February - 4 - 2011

How long has it been? 15 years? Yes….. freaking 15 years since I last roller skated or roller bladed and finally I agreed to go roller blading again. That’s where I found The Wheels, a Disco theme roller skating rink.

The Wheels Logo

Ehhhh.. wait, DISCO??? WHAT DISCO?? Yes, imagine a group of friends getting together and partying and discoing but all these are done on wheels (skates and roller blades). Sure is a nice touch to the feel. For someone like me who has left the disco environment for who knows how many long years, this brings me back to my college days.

Taken Using Canon Ixus 130

The Wheels Disco Skate Ring

My first thought was IS THIS REALLY A SKATING RINK? We (yes, I did say we) were welcomed with techno music that suddenly made me felt like I was high in dancing mode. Then I realized it’s only a disco themed skating place, what more has this place got to offer? Then I saw that Ahhhh… they have disco themed roller skates and roller blades too.

Roller Blades with LED Disco Lights

What do I mean by that? Look at the other one, the one without the lights? There’s a battery there? Battery powered roller blades, now if only they gave me a speed boost.

Just so that I tell you, I was a noob in roller blading, heck I even forgotten to tie the shoelaces all the way to the top that I lost my balance so many times. Another thing is that they have a locker for rent in order to keep your belongings. Nice!

So who are the We? It’s The Weird One, Daniel Chew and Yen of course. Who else?

DanielCtw and Yen Skating

Now who said people like me can’t skate?

Of course, where the heck is this place? It’s at The Wheels and it’s at Subang Avenue.

Here are the details of the skating place.

Pricing for the Wheels Skating Rink

Notice the price list given above. Well, too good to be true? Wait till you see what else they have to offer. As it has just been opened recently, there’s a promotion going on. Instead of paying RM25 like other people would have paid, you only have to pay 50% off it’s original price. That’s only RM12 for the WHOLE DAY!

Okay, I lied when I said I just so happened to have the urge to go skating and suddenly just bumped into The Wheels. Basically it’s all thanks to Hahah.com.my for allowing us to have a free time at The Wheels. They have these amazing deal and like I said, we can now buy the whole day pass and you can get it at Hahah.com.my. So Get The Deal with only RM12 for the whole day at Hahah.com.my. Of course, this deal last from 3 – 8 Feb 2011, so get it quick. multiple vouchers can be purchase so buy it as gifts or host a party at the Skating Rink!

Hahah Logo

Though I’ve always wondered how come Hahah is spelt with an additional ‘H’? Well that’s for you people to find out. When I look at the photo, I realized that the extra H goes well with the logo. Well, maybe that’s my weird intuition.

As of now, every website usually has its own facebook site, and Hahah is also the same. Hop on to their FaceBook page (which has 25k fans currently) and find out their latest deals.

Crap, forgot to say that this Hahah has something called the Rewards Multiplier. What it means? We understand that Hahah offers 50% off this deal for The Wheels. But….. for after 20 units are sold a free mineral bottle will be given. So the more people buy, the better the deals.
