Germany A Destination

Posted by danielctw On May - 6 - 2008

Flashback, when I first started to work in a software company, I had got to known a colleague who is very much into outdoors. Then suddenly he resigned and went and join another company, now he’s in Germany. Okay, in a way I felt he has a good opportunity working overseas, though actually I felt that it’s also a good opportunity for me to bug him about how it’s like in Germany.

I don’t really know Germany, but at least I know about Berlin, it’s capital city. :D

A bit background check on Germany and I found out that this is where the mobile Mercedes started and also the first motorway (Autobahn), the AVUS and also the first automobile developed. Unlike Malaysia, no speed limit blanket. Wheee… I can go up till 160km/h on a Kancil. Hahaha…. of course it doesn’t applies to congested areas where there are bound to be lots of traffic.

I was thinking, if Joe (my ex-colleague’s name) is still there, I can ask for a list of Berlin Hotels so that I can plan my so called future trip to Germany. Of course this time I will be smart enough to learn some German and also to rent a car instead of taking the cab. So far so good, like our roads in Malaysia, the federal road in Germany are called Bundesstraßen (not really sure how to pronounce it though). Well, since I am planning to drive in Germany, I better get some headstart as to what to expect. But then I realised there are many things to understand such as B 1 and B56n – which are bypass routes. Okay, I am now totally confused.

Either I am too ignorant but the only way why some of the Germany states name I can actually remember are usually because I do watch the Bundlesliga Germany (football or soccer). So if I were to stay in hotels of Frankfurt Hotels and Munich Hotels, these names also remind me of Frankfurt FC and Bayern Munich FC. Call me a football fanatic, but these are places where Klinsmann came from and jumped to the English Premier League.

Well, so now you know driving around Germany has it’s pro and cons. First I don’t understand German and now I got to learn German. Words like Bundesländer (states), called Landesstraße (country road) or Staatsstraße (state road) will be a very common sight while driving. *sweats*

The best name though would be if I were to stay in Köln. I wonder how am I going to ask people there the direction to a any Köln Hotels. Opps, after google, I found out it was pronounce as cologne. I think with my limited vocabulary of Guten Morgen and Guten Abend, I’ll be having a hard time finding my way in Germany. But nevertheless, for someone who likes traveling, I don’t think this will be a very hard obstacle to meet.

Oh yeah, I’ve got something nice from my ex-colleague, a postcard. Hehe.. you’ll be surprised to see what kind of postcards they have there which we will will never get it here. But I guessed I will upload it later.
